Gotoh
The Archsage who guides Marth to cure King Hardin's possession by the Darksphere.
Gotoh is the Archsage who plays a pivotal role in Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, released for the Super Famicom on January 21, 1994. As one of Marth's key allies, he serves as a critical guide during both halves of the game's story. In Book 2, Gotoh explains that King Hardin has been possessed by the evil power of the Darksphere, a gift secretly given to him by the sorcerer Gharnef. He reveals that only the Lightsphere can counter this dark influence and save Hardin from his madness. Lore & Background
Set on the continent of Archanea, Gotoh appears prominently in Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem. After Marth escapes being hunted as a traitor and flees to the desert of Khadein, he meets with Gotoh. The sage reveals that Hardin's aggressive military expansion is driven by possession from the Darksphere. To save his friend, Marth must find the Lightsphere and three other magical spheres: the Lifesphere, the Geosphere, and the Starsphere, which requires collecting Starshards to reassemble it. Gotoh later arrives to inform Marth that Gharnef has kidnapped several female clerics, including Princess Nyna and his own sister Elice, to serve as sacrifices for reviving Medeus.
In Their Own Story
In Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem, Gotoh meets Marth in the desert of Khadein after the prince is branded a traitor. Gotoh explains that Hardin's madness stems from the Darksphere given by Gharnef and instructs Marth to gather four magical spheres. After Marth retrieves the Lightsphere from icy mountains, he stages an assault on Archanea. Even when Hardin dies apologizing for his actions, Gotoh appears again with grim news: Gharnef has kidnapped Nyna and Elice. Gotoh guides the final push to an ancient temple where Gharnef holds a revival ceremony. Marth kills Gharnef, retrieves Falchion, rescues the clerics, and uses the Binding Shield to slay Medeus in his dragon form.
Reader's Guide
Gotoh provides essential exposition in Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem regarding Hardin's possession by the Darksphere. Players must follow his guidance to collect four specific items: the Lightsphere (found in icy mountains), the Lifesphere, the Geosphere, and the Starsphere (reassembled via Starshards). If these spheres are not collected, the game ends prematurely with Marth fighting Medeus again. With them, Marth unlocks the Fire Emblem's full power as the Binding Shield. Gotoh also directs the final mission to an ancient temple where Gharnef holds sacrificial ceremonies involving Princess Nyna and Elice. His information is mandatory for reaching the true ending where peace is fully restored.
