Medeus
The Dark Dragon leader of the Manakete tribe who was slain and later revived.
Medeus is the Dark Dragon and leader of the last surviving tribe of Manakete, an ancient people capable of shapeshifting into dragons. Serving as the primary antagonist in Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, he first appears during the events retold from Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. After being defeated by Marth, who wielded the magical sword Falchion due to his heritage as a descendant of Anri, Medeus is slain and peace is restored to Archanea. However, his story does not end there; years later, he is revived through a dark ritual orchestrated by the sorcerer Gharnef, forcing Marth to confront him once more in his true form.

Lore & Background
Medeus leads the last surviving tribe of Manakete, an ancient race that could shapeshift into dragons. In the first half of Mystery of the Emblem, which retells the events of Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, he acts as the will driving a hostile invasion alongside his ally Gharnef. Marth, the prince of Altea, must recover the magical sword Falchion to defeat him, a weapon only Marth can wield because he is a descendant of Anri, the warrior who originally defeated Medeus. Upon recovering the Fire Emblem shield and Falchion, Marth confronts Gharnef and Medeus in the first book's climax.
In Their Own Story
Two years after his initial defeat, Medeus is revived by Gharnef, who kidnaps female clerics including Princess Nyna and Elice to serve as sacrifices for a resurrection ceremony. Gotoh informs Marth that Gharnef holds this ritual in an ancient temple. After Marth's army kills Gharnef, retrieves Falchion, and rescues the clerics, they confront Medeus, who has taken the form of an enormous dark dragon. Using the Falchion and the Binding Shield—the full power of the Fire Emblem unlocked by inserting five magical spheres—Marth slays Medeus for good, restoring peace to Archanea.
Reader's Guide
Medeus appears as a final boss in two distinct phases within Mystery of the Emblem: first as the leader of the Manakete tribe in Book 1, and later as an enormous dark dragon in Book 2. In the second encounter, if the player has collected all five magical spheres (Lightsphere, Lifesphere, Geosphere, Starsphere, and Darksphere), Marth can unlock the Binding Shield to defeat him permanently. If these spheres are not collected, the game ends prematurely with a false victory where Gharnef is defeated but Medeus remains alive, forcing the player into another war against him.
