Grima

The Fell Dragon that slept for two millennia before the seal broke.

Grima is the Fell Dragon and the primary antagonist of Fire Emblem Awakening. Set approximately 2000 years after the events of the original Fire Emblem, this ancient entity represents the ultimate threat to the world. In ancient times, Grima attempted to destroy everything until the Divine Dragon Naga intervened. Using two magical objects forged from her fangs—Falchion and the Fire Emblem—the First Exalt struck down Grima, sending it into a long slumber. The dragon's return drives the conflict as the Shepherds defend Ylisse against undead invaders called the Risen.

Lore & Background

The story is set 2000 years after the original Fire Emblem and Gaiden. In ancient times, Grima attempted to destroy the world. To stop this threat, the Divine Dragon Naga chose the ruler of the Halidom of Ylisse, known as the First Exalt. She granted him power through two magical objects forged from her fangs: Falchion, a sword with the power to slay dragons, and the Fire Emblem, a magical shield. With these weapons, the Exalt struck down Grima, sending it into a long slumber. Since that victory, the continents of Archanea and Valentia became known as Ylisse and Valm. By the present time, the land is divided between three countries: the Halidom of Ylisse, which worships Naga; Plegia, which worships Grima; and Regna Ferox. The Shepherds, led by Prince Chrom, defend Ylisse from undead invaders called the Risen and attacks from the hostile nation of Plegia.

In Their Own Story

The narrative focuses on Chrom, the prince of Ylisse, and his personal army, the Shepherds. They rescue Robin, an amnesiac Avatar who becomes their tactician. The army travels across Ylisse to defend it from the Risen and attacks from Plegia. Development began in 2010 with veterans filling key roles, designing the game as a possible last entry due to declining sales. The team incorporated elements from all previous Fire Emblem games while making decisions based on what was feasible on the 3DS hardware. Upon release in April 2012 (Japan) and early 2013 (North America/PAL), the game received critical acclaim for its story and cast, though some gameplay options like disabling permanent character death received mixed reception.

Reader's Guide

Grima is central to the plot involving Chrom and the Shepherds. The enemy forces include undead invaders called the Risen and the hostile nation of Plegia, which worships Grima. The game features forty-nine recruitable characters: twenty-eight in the main story and twenty-one in Paralogues. Players can customize the Avatar's name, gender, and appearance. Combat uses a turn-based system on a grid-based battlefield with two modes: Classic Mode (permanent death) and Casual Mode (units restored after battle). The game was followed by Fire Emblem Fates in 2015.
