Edelgard possesses long white hair and lilac eyes, a physical change resulting from childhood experiments where she was subjected to forced implantation of two Crests. Only one survivor among ten siblings, she suffered lasting psychological trauma while attempting to become a worthy heir. Despite already holding the Minor Crest of Seiros, she was given the Crest of Flames by force, drastically shortening her lifespan. Her ambition is driven by this suffering; she allies with the mysterious faction known as Those Who Slither in the Dark to wage war against the Church and dismantle the system where noble bloodlines hold sway over social status. In Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, set in a parallel universe, she instead cuts ties with those who slither in the dark and declares war two years later on the Church of Seiros.

In Their Own Story

In Fire Emblem: Three Houses, if the player chooses to teach the Black Eagles House and meets specific requirements, they can join Edelgard's cause, making her the main protagonist of the Crimson Flower route. In all other scenarios where the player opposes her, she becomes a primary antagonist. The narrative explores grey morality, with some critics noting her story path offers a realistic view of class resentment, while others criticize its short length. In the parallel timeline of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, Edelgard is rescued by mercenary Shez, triggering alternate events. In the Scarlet Blaze and Golden Wildfire routes, she forms an alliance with Claude to take down the Central Church and Kingdom. Conversely, in the Azure Gleam route, Thales uses dark magic to subdue her, reducing her power; Dimitri allies with Claude and Rhea to kill Thales but spares Edelgard after seeing the effect of Thales' actions on her mental state.

To access Edelgard's protagonist route in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, players must select the Black Eagles House at the start of the game and fulfill certain requirements to join her cause. In combat, she functions as a magic user capable of long-range attacks, though her specific class progression depends on player choices.
