Lore & Background

The Altean Army was shattered when the Galra Empire subdued and enslaved the planet Altea. Princess Farla, the 16-year-old ruler of Altea, was spirited away as a baby by her royal adviser, Strategist Raible, after her parents, older brothers, and older sister were executed by Emperor Daibazaal. Raible raised her like his own daughter. The army's hope was rekindled when five space pilots—Akira Kogane, Takashi Shirogane, Isamu Kurogane, Tsuyoshi Seidou, and Hiroshi Suzuishi—escaped Galra captivity and landed on Altea. There, they discovered the secret of GoLion, a mighty sentient robot. Thousands of years ago, GoLion was an arrogant robot who, after defeating several Beastmen, tried to challenge the goddess of the universe. For his hubris, the goddess separated him into five lion robots that crash-landed on Altea. Princess Farla recruited the five pilots to reawaken GoLion and fight back against the Empire. After the death of pilot Takashi Shirogane in episode 6, Farla herself took up piloting the Blue Lion, wearing a pink uniform, despite being relatively inexperienced. The spirit of her deceased father, King Raimon, occasionally appears to provide guidance.

In Their Own Story

The Altean Army's struggle began when the Galra Empire subdued and enslaved their planet. Princess Farla, raised in hiding by Strategist Raible and Senior Court Lady Hys, swore revenge against Emperor Daibazaal for ravaging her planet. Her only friends growing up were a family of five space mice named Platt and Chuchule. The arrival of five space pilots—who had returned to Earth only to find it annihilated by World War III, then were captured and forced to fight in Emperor Daibazaal's arena—changed everything. After escaping and landing on Altea, they discovered the five lion robots that form GoLion. Farla recruited them as pilots. When Takashi Shirogane was wounded in an attack by Honerva and died from his injuries in episode 6, Farla replaced him as the Blue Lion's pilot, surprising everyone. The team later gained allies including Ryou Shirogane (Takashi's younger brother) and Princess Amue (Farla's cousin from Planet Heracles). Senior Court Lady Hys died near the finale while protecting Raible from a laser blast. In the final episode, Ryou killed Imperial Prince Sincline at the cost of his own life. The Goddess of the Universe, who had split GoLion into five lions to teach him humility, later restored GoLion's lost power, making him stronger than ever.

The team faces the Galra Empire, a race of merciless individuals who oppress even their own people, led by Emperor Daibazaal and his son Prince Sincline. The Empire invades planets with the aid of Galran Beast Fighters. Key allies include Princess Amue and Prince Alor from Planet Heracles, and Ryou Shirogane. The team must protect Farla from Sincline, who lustfully pursues her due to her resemblance to his dead mother. The Goddess of the Universe can restore GoLion's power once he proves his humility.
